You & Your Home Town in the Movies

A One Hour Tour of Emporium Filmed in 1940

This film was done in the Spring of 1940 by a company called Amateur Productions out of Akron Ohio. This company would be sponsored to come into a town and film the people and places for several days.  Once the film was completed, they would return and show it at the local theater.  The funds raised would pay for the filming and they would donate part of the funds to the organization who sponsored them.

The film takes you all over Emporium showing you a rare look into everyday life in 1940. The town is booming.  People are everywhere, the stores are full and workers pour out of Sylvania. You see people leaving church on Sunday and kids leaving all three schools after school. You see people on the streets, attending meetings and working in local establishments. The fire department shows off their new fire truck and their marching band. You will see all of the new cars for 1940 as well as fashions, groceries, hardware and more at the local stores. Milk production is represented from two local dairies. There is a significant section on the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at one of the local Camps. And much, much more!!

If you had family or lived in Emporium yourself in 1940, there is a good chance of seeing people you know in the film. As there is no sound, there are plans to publish a companion book that will identify the people and places on the film.  It should be out sometime later this year.

The cost of the film is $19.95 plus  shipping. It comes in VHS or DVD. Please specify.

Shipping for the DVD is $2.00 and $2.75 for the VHS.  Priority Mail is $3.85 for either format.
