“The
Bucktail waves no more in shot filled air.
No foeman’s ball tears living flesh and bone.
These stone and bronze men stand the final rest,
And we, we stand all gathered at their shrines.“
THE SILENT PICKETS
Again this year on Saturday morning (May 15, 11:30) , Armed Forces
Day, in Driftwood, folks will gather for a brief ceremony to honor the
colorful unit of Pennsylvania riflemen who gave the name Bucktail to
so many things in this area. Company C, the Cameron Rifles was
made up of men from this area.
The ceremony began 9 years ago when the Bucktail Chapter of Retired
Officers Association decided to honor their Civil War namesakes at the
place where many of the volunteer woodsmen and their commanding
officer Thomas Kane disembarked for glory on the large lumberman’s
rafts.
Each year different namesakes units, veteran groups, military
organizations, and a middle school Civil War Club have
played rolls in the affair. This year The Elk County Chapter
Committee of the American Legion, the Bucktail Chapter of the Military
Officers Association of America, and Bucktail re-enactors will take
part in the service. Guest speaker will be Mr. Murrey Neeper,
principal of the St. Marys Area Middle School and advisor of the SMMS
Civil War Club.
Citizens of Cameron County, are invited to attend this only Armed
Forces Day remembrance in the area. Representatives are area
veteran’s organizations and descendants of Civil War veterans are
also urged to attend.
The Bucktails left a legacy of bravery and duty to service that all
Cameron County veterans have lived up to when called to arms through
out our County’s history. Take a moment out of your day and
honor their memory.
The Little Museum will be open following the service where you can
view photos of the Bucktail veterans.
It is too bad
that there was such a small turn-out for this worth-while event.
