Seventy plus third graders, their teachers and chaperones
visited The Little Museum on Friday, April 30. The event was
planned through the efforts of teacher and Society Member, Cheryl
Hockenberry, School Principle, Clyde Moate and Board Member Mike
Wennin. The kids came down in two groups, one in the morning and
one in the afternoon. Mike had spoken to the group on the previous
Friday at the school to give them an idea of what they were going to
see. He passed around a leather football helmet, a hand carved
wooden doll, some arrowheads, several photos of kids from one hundred
years ago and stumped them with radio tubes and a disc from the 1896
Regina Music Box. The kids proved to be quite interested and excited
about the items. It was fun to watch them try to grasp the
concept of no electricity, no plastic, no computers and NO GAMEBOYS!
When the students arrived at the museum, they were
photographed and then signed the guest book to record their
visit. It was explained that this visit would now be part of
their history. Once inside they explored one room at a
time. Questions were answered, items demonstrated and displays
explained. Of course they were interested in anything that moved or
made noise! As the photos attest, they were very absorbed in what they
were seeing and inquisitive as to how things worked and why.
Once the students returned home, we have heard several
reports of the kids talking for hours about what they saw. It was a
very rewarding day for the Society Members, Don Hefright, Glenda Card,
Dave Sizer and Mike Wennin who played host to the children. We
hope this will become an annual event as it really made a difference
with the kids. Click on the photos to see them full size.
